They Copy What They Love

They Copy What They Love

Style is only the beginning.

The Menoirs | MANCUB

There's a point when you realise Cubs are watching absolutely everything.

Not just the obvious stuff. It's the way Dad stands, the phrases he uses, the trainers he always reaches for. It's how he holds his coffee, how he celebrates a goal. It's same hands in pockets, the same walk and the same inexplicable obsession with a particular pair of trainers.

Dad lifts, Cub must lift.

And, slightly terrifyingly, all the things you'd really rather they hadn't noticed. Dad says something once that probably shouldn't be repeated at school? You can absolutely guarantee that's the sentence that sticks. F**k.

They are tiny, extremely observant apprentices, and while the copying can occasionally be inconvenient, there's something pretty special about knowing someone thinks you're worth copying in the first place.

They copy what they love and that's one of the reasons that sentence has become such a big part of MANCUB.

Style is inherited too

Before Cubs know what a brand is, or what's fashionable, or whether two colours technically work together, they know what their Man wears.

They know his favourite hoodie, which shoes are 'the good ones', the difference between getting ready to walk the dog and getting dressed to go somewhere fancy.

Style becomes one of those little things passed down without anybody formally teaching it. We call it, Style Inherited.

It's ultimately where MANCUB came from. Not the idea of putting Dad in a novelty t-shirt and printing a smaller version for his son.

The idea that father and son matching clothes could actually be clothes both of them would choose to wear.

Together or separately.

Matching shouldn't look like fancy dress

This has always been the rule.

Being obviously connected is good. Looking like you've been forced into identical costumes for the sake of a family photograph? Not cool.

The match might be the same silhouette. The same fabric. A shared graphic. A tiny MAN / CUB detail. Or exactly the same piece, just made properly for two very different sized people.

Our matching father and son hoodies, for example, aren't designed to scream LOOK, WE'RE MATCHING from across the room.

You just know. And that's the sweet spot we design for.

It's never really been about the clothes

The clothes are simply the visible bit.

It's the Saturday mornings. The football, the holidays, sitting on shoulders because little legs have apparently stopped working. It's teaching them to ride a bike, letting them 'help', and showing them how to do something, then watching them insist they can do it entirely by themselves five minutes later.

It's being watched when you don't realise you're being watched.

One day, they probably won't want to match you

There will presumably come a deeply offensive day when Dad's trainers are suddenly embarrassing.

The hoodie he once desperately wanted a smaller version of will become 'not really my thing', and the little person who copied everything will be busy working out his own version of everything instead.

That's exactly how it should be.

But until then? We'll take the matching, copying and being someones blueprint for a little while longer. Okay okay, for as long as is possible!

They copy what they love.

We just make it worth copying.
